Filling our own cup is hard work

Why? Firstly, the act of self-care goes against the ego’s desires. In a world that glorifies self-sacrifice and self-betrayal in order to ‘please others’ first — self-care is deemed as such a ‘selfish thing to do’. More so if you are ‘spiritual’. Shouldn’t you be putting others first? Nevermind your own pain…

Doesn’t make sense, does it? How can we give or share UNCONDITIONALLY from a chalice that is empty? Unless, of course, that sharing is conditional. In which case, it definitely is okay if it IS transactional. Just don’t make it sound otherwise. That is deception.

Yet, self-care goes deeper and beyond the superficial ‘one day at a spa’ frivolity (although spas ARE great). Self-care is about knowing your needs, being honest about them, and communicating them. Self-care is constantly reassessing your healthy boundaries as your grow. As spiritual practitioners, one also has to consider energetic hygiene and boundaries.

Where are your energies going and what are your energies feeding? Again, these needs do change as you evolve.

And at the end of it all, self-care comes from our ability to be honest with ourselves. Am I able to practice — better yet, embody — what I would like to teach or share with another? If not, then what is my true motivation in doing so?

Is my body-relationship an honest one? Is my self-relationship an honest one?

Be a better version of yourself before expecting better from anyone — or anything — else.

May your cup overflow with the abundance of all that Life has to offer, so that all else will be moved gracefully into place.
